MGI Tech has announced an ambitious partnership with the Universidad de San Martín de Porres (USMP) to enhance genetic research in Peru. By introducing advanced next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, the collaboration aims to unlock genetic insights critical to public health and personalized medicine.
Transformative Technology for Key Studies
The partnership equips USMP’s Genetic and Molecular Biology Research Center with state-of-the-art tools, including the DNBSEQ-G400RS sequencer, MGISP-100 automated library preparation system, and MEGABOLT bioinformatics accelerator. This advanced setup will empower researchers to study rare diseases, cancer, pharmacogenomics, and the genetics of native populations with unprecedented speed and accuracy.
Carlos Carpio, MGI Latin America’s Commercial Director, emphasized the importance of the initiative:
“This partnership democratizes access to genomic research in Peru, promoting innovation and accelerating critical discoveries.”
Bridging the Genomics Gap
Dr. Ricardo Fujita, Director of the USMP Research Institute, highlights a pressing issue: 80% of global populations, including Peruvians, are underrepresented in genetic studies. This gap limits the ability to address health challenges like cancer, diabetes, and rare diseases.
Studies reveal that 70% of Peru’s population has indigenous genetic heritage, making targeted research essential. The new technology will drive localized solutions and contribute 1,000 genomes from native populations to global databases, assisting international collaboration.
Develop Personalized Medicine
Five innovative research projects are underway, covering rare diseases, cancer analysis, immunogenomics, and more. Dr. Fujita predicts these efforts will promote USMP as a leader in genomic research while promoting collaboration with hospitals and global institutions.
