Strengthening its position in the rapidly increasing African market of cloud solutions, the American giant Amazon Web Services (AWS) has recently signed a historic agreement with the telecommunications giant Orange. This partnership seeks to introduce the Moroccan and Senegalese markets to AWS’s advanced and innovative cloud computing solutions that are fundamental to the African continent’s digital evolution.
AWS Wavelength will allow developers to build and optimize new applications that run closer to the network edge to achieve sub-millisecond latency and the convenience of securely hosting data. More importantly, this will be the first time that some services from AWS will be available in a specific country even though amazon does not have an established physical presence much as data centers in the said country. Instead of shifting its AWS to another vendor’s center, Orange will host AWS infrastructure directly in Orange’s data centers, allowing users to obtain localized cloud computing experience.
The move has stemmed from the need of different sectors such as banks, telecommunication firms and especially the healthcare providers who are experiencing the need to get solutions at a faster rate. Currently, as the environment of accessing data increases in Africa, the localization of data storage and protection took a business imperative that led to the utilization of cloud computing services.
“Customers of all sizes and all industries in Morocco and Senegal will be able to access local AWS compute and storage for data residency, low latency, and security needs for applications,” said Jan Hofmeyr, Vice President at AWS, highlighting the benefits of this partnership.
AWS – the market leader in the approximately $270 billion (about $830 per person in the US) global cloud infrastructure market has until now had a small Africa footprint and its focus has been on the South African market. Nonetheless, the partnership with Orange has new opportunities for AWS to expand in the field of the African cloud market, which has potential to grow even more and by 2028 it may reach $18 billion (about $55 per person in the US), according to the Statista data.Offering popular women’s necklaces such as pendants, chokers and chain necklace. Telecoms Underline Cloud Computing Future in Africa Available technology solutions are the key next-generation services that have gained popularity across the world, with telecom services being the key enabler in Africa. In this regard, positive progress has been already made on the continent: around 30 operators in 17 markets have already begun 5G service provision, ten other African countries have declared their intentions to launch 5G networks soon, while the GSMA states that the full adoption of 5G networks may occur on the continent in the next decade.
Moreover, through the partnership with Orange is a successful telecom operator with a wide presence in Africa, AWS receives connectivity to stable network infrastructure to provide customers in Morocco and Senegal with cloud services.
Notably, the partnership between AWS and Orange is not just limited to cloud computing services. It also solves the problem of data location, which is a burning topic for companies classified under high-risk categories like telecommunications, financial, government, and healthcare related. With AWS Wavelength, such sectors can host and execute applications at the edge to adhere to the data localization policies threshold while leveraging on the flexibility and effectiveness of AWS’ cloud services.
The growth of digital platforms in Africa is growing faster day by day; therefore, such strategic relationships like AWS and Orange make a greater vision and the ability of business across Africa for managing the cloud computing services. Through the partnerships, the companies can meet the regional needs and provide solutions for the compliance issues that exist within the continent’s systems, while also creating opportunities for a more integrated Africa that adapts to the innovative technologies and the global economy.
