ChatGPT users worldwide faced significant disruptions as OpenAI’s widely-used chatbot, along with its API and Sora video generation services, experienced a global outage. The issue left millions, including businesses relying on AI for critical operations, struggling to access services.
In a Twitter post, OpenAI acknowledged the issue, saying, “We’re experiencing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix. Sorry, and we’ll keep you updated.”
OpenAI Identifies Recovery Path
Later, OpenAI updated its website, stating that some traffic was beginning to return successfully. “We have identified a pathway to recovery and are continuing to work on restoring services to normal,” the statement read.
Outage tracking platform Downdetector recorded over 2,400 reports of disruptions early Thursday morning. GPTPro users reported difficulties logging in, slow response times, and reduced chatbot performance.
Not the First Incident
This outage follows similar disruptions earlier this month and in June, which affected tens of thousands of users. On November 8, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweeted about reliability issues after a 30-minute downtime, acknowledging the need for improvements.
Despite occasional setbacks, ChatGPT has attracted over 300 million weekly users since its launch in November 2022. OpenAI’s rapid growth is reflected in its skyrocketing valuation, now at $157 billion.
AI Reliability Under Scrutiny
This latest incident has raised concerns about the reliability of AI tools, especially as they become deeply integrated into professional and personal workflows.
